Manjarabad sits in the Sakleshpur taluk of Karnataka's Hassan district, a hill locality built around one of India's most unusual military landmarks. The fort is located in Sakaleshpura taluk, 4 kilometres away from the Sakaleshpura town to its south west, which is on the right bank of the Hemavati River, 23 miles from Hassan on the National Highway 75 that runs from Bangalore to Mangalore. The area takes its name from the Kannada word for mist, a nod to the fog that regularly rolls over the region's coffee-covered slopes.
Perched high above the surrounding valleys, the star-shaped fort constructed by Tipu Sultan in 1792 is located at a height of 988 metres, approximately 3241 feet above sea level, and it has been observed that on a clear sky day, people can also see the Arabian sea from the fort. This altitude and Western Ghats setting give Manjarabad a cooler, greener character compared to the plains of Bangalore, making it a sought-after address for second homes and holiday residences.
Historically, the locality served a strategic military purpose. Tipu Sultan ordered its construction during a period of intense military activity as tensions with the British East India Company and the Marathas escalated, and the fort served as a frontline defence outpost to guard the crucial highway that connected Mangalore to Tipu Sultan's capital. Today, that same highway corridor has evolved into a well-travelled route linking Bangalore, Hassan, and the coastal city of Mangalore, positioning Manjarabad as an accessible retreat for city dwellers.
Real estate interest in Manjarabad and greater Sakleshpur has picked up as branded, boutique residential concepts enter the hill-station market, offering buyers a mix of tranquil surroundings, coffee-estate views, and proximity to a well-known heritage landmark rarely found elsewhere in South India.
Manjarabad's appeal rests on its position along a major inter-state highway and rail corridor, even as it retains a quiet, hill-station feel.
Manjarabad and its surrounding Sakleshpur taluk are dotted with heritage sites, waterfalls, and viewpoints that define the everyday landscape here.
