Rs 485 Crore Redevelopment Set to Boost Vasanth Nagar's Rail Connectivity

Developer

The Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station is being redeveloped at a cost of Rs 484.58 crore into a modern, passenger friendly hub. As the city's oldest railway station, it played a central role in shaping Bengaluru's connectivity and remains one of its four major stations today. The redevelopment of Bengaluru Cantonment, under the South Western Railway (SWR), aims to transform it into a world-class facility, with the foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2022.

About 56% of the redevelopment work has been completed and the entire project is to be completed by 2027. A new station building covering an area of 6,813 sq m on the south side and a second entry station building towards Miller's Road (north side) covering an area of 7,366 sq m are to be constructed. The new station building will come up on the main entry—Vasanthnagar side, and the second entry—Millers Road.

The other proposed facilities include air concourse (3,860 sq m), waiting hall, VIP lounge, three foot overbridges of 12-metre width each, one pedestrian foot overbridge of 5-metre width, 12 lifts, 11 escalators, retiring rooms, dormitory and basement parking on both south and north sides. The proposed redeveloped station will have salient features such as centralised air-conditioning, multi-level car parking, a sewerage treatment plant, rainwater harvesting and solar energy.

The redeveloped Cantonment Railway Station will emerge as a transport hub as three rail networks currently under construction will be integrated. The metro station under the second phase, covering the total underground distance of 13.8 km (Dairy Circle - Nagawara) is expected to be operational around December 2026. This convergence positions Vasanth Nagar as a critical multi-modal transport nexus for Bangalore's growing commuter base.

The modernization project promises to increase revenue in nearby neighborhoods such as Vasanth Nagar and Palace Guttahalli. Vasanth Nagar is an upscale area in the heart of Central Bangalore, hosting residences of government officials, politicians & police officers with commercial activity via 5-star hotels. The redevelopment aligns with broader infrastructure upgrades: The estimated end-to-end journey time between Cantonment and Whitefield is 35 minutes.
