Metro Line 4 Transforms Ghodbunder Road

Thane Metro Line 4 and 4A Phase 1 operations are scheduled to begin by the end of December, with the first stretch running between Gaimukh and Vijay Garden, covering four stations on Ghodbunder Road. This milestone marks a historic infrastructure achievement for Thane and the broader Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The metro will slice travel times by up to 75%, helping residents completely bypass infamous bottlenecks like Teen Hath Naka and Kapurbawdi. The commissioning of Metro Line 4 and 4A will trigger a major modal shift from road transport to high-speed rail, significantly reducing traffic bottlenecks along Ghodbunder Road and LBS Marg, providing commuters with a safer, faster, and reliable transit alternative.

Commercial services will begin between Gaimukh and Vijay Garden, serving four major elevated stations: Gaimukh, Owale, Kasarvadavali, and Vijay Garden. Phase-1, stretching from Gaimukh to Cadbury Junction, covers 10.5 kilometers and includes 10 stations, with four stations ready for use by December 2025.

Once the full corridor becomes operational, Metro-4 will likely cut Thane–Wadala travel time by more than 50% for many commuters, depending on origin and destination points. By offering a comfortable, air-conditioned, and eco-friendly ride, the new line promises to lower pollution levels, reduce vehicle congestion on roads, and usher in a stress-free travel era for Thanekars.

In a significant step, MMRDA has completed the erection of a crucial 55-meter-long Special Steel Span on Ghodbunder Road, with the project coming under Metro Line 4 (Package CA-12), enabling Phase 1 commissioning. Another major span — a 48-metre, 325-tonne steel segment — was installed at Kapur Bawdi Junction on Ghodbunder Road, completing all special steel spans along the Thane stretch between Majiwada and Kasarvadavali.

To keep the metro accessible for daily commuters, ticket pricing will follow standard distance-based MMRDA fare rules, with single-journey fares beginning at ₹10 for 0-3 kilometers, ₹20 for 3-12 kilometers, and ₹30-₹40 for longer distances. Regular commuters will have access to monthly trip passes and contactless smart cards for hassle-free travel and discounted fares.
